Following the impact of the COVID pandemic there have been UK-wide concerns about IBD patients on waiting and surveillance lists being missed. This project aimed to develop a pathway for IBD patients with a high risk of dysplasia to ensure appointments and screenings were attended, and patients felt supported via improved education and counselling.
The creation of the IBD Dysplasia Surveillance Pathway (DSP) has allowed clinicians to collaborate more effectively and monitor patients more closely, aiding in the early detection of colorectal cancer. Prior to this, there was a risk of disconnect between surveillance procedures and clinical follow up. Since April 2022, 162 patients have been referred to the DSP, and 50 have been reviewed. The clinic has received positive patient feedback despite being a new initiative, and is showing improved outcomes for patients. The DSP is transferrable and can be used in other locations and with different specialities.
