This innovative project aimed to offer IBD patients awaiting elective surgery a single point of access to their IBD team in a large tertiary referral centre in England serving around 10,000 IBD patients, and to improve communication and surgical pathways.
The creation of a new IBD surgical link (ISL) role ensured that patients referred for surgery were prioritised according to their clinical need and that potential delays were recognised and addressed early. The ISL provided patients awaiting surgery with a point of contact and allowed for coordination of care.
