Richard Driscoll Award

The Richard Driscoll Award for IBD Nurse Excellence recognises nurses, or nurse-led teams, who have instigated improvements and innovations in the care of patients with IBD. Designed to showcase best practice in IBD management, entries may encompass:

  • Service improvement or commissioning
  • Training for patients or colleagues
  • Support and communication channels for patients, including online
  • A change that has made a difference to patients
Entries will be reviewed once the submission window closes on 7 September. Successful applicants will be shortlisted and invited to create a poster, with support provided throughout the process. Posters showcasing the work of shortlisted entries will be displayed at the IBD STARS event and subsequently featured on the Tillotts LOGIC website. The award recipient will also be offered the opportunity to publish their abstract in Gastrointestinal Nursing (if UK recipient) or The Irish Society of Gastroenterology event programme (if Ireland recipient).

Previous Richard Driscoll Award Winners

In 2023, Rachel Campbell and Callula Nulty identified a possible solution to the perennial problem of long waiting times for IBD patients after a positive FIT test (Faecal Immunochemical Test). Patients who had cancer ruled out by Callula’s colorectal team, but were diagnosed with IBD, were being referred to gastroenterology on the general referral pathway. This resulted in patients waiting up to 38 weeks to be seen by a consultant.

Working closely together, Rachel and Callula devised their award-winning idea –‘Streamlining IBD Diagnosis: Reducing Patient Waiting Times through Collaborative Pathways’.

Following a successful business case and 6-month trial, Callula now refers patients with IBD to Rachel’s specially created ‘Hotslot Clinic’ where they receive both IBD treatment and emotional support within 8 weeks. This results in faster symptom control and greater patient satisfaction as well as considerable cost savings for the NHS.
