The IBD nursing team faced rising advice line queries, delays in flare management and inefficient communication. In response, the IBD nursing team implemented Accurx, a secure, NHS-approved messaging platform, to improve communication with patients, speed up responses to queries, enhance the overall patient experience, create a more efficient, digitally enabled service, and align with the Trust’s roll-out of paperless electronic patient records.

This project evaluated the integration of iOWNA, a co-designed digital support platform for healthcare professionals and patients into the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) care pathway from 2023. Unlike pre-designed systems, iOWNA was developed to address specific challenges within the IBD service, targeting inefficiencies and gaps in care. The initiative aimed to enhance communication, streamline delivery and improve efficiency, aligning with NHS digital transformation goals.

Clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) were spending much of their time on administrative tasks, which was having a negative impact on direct patient care and patient pathways. Delays in treatment, reduced patient contact and limited clinic availability caused bottlenecks in patient pathways, and communication challenges between the hospital and community teams. With a shortage of IBD gastroenterologists, there was a clear need for a strong, nurse-led approach to maintain high-quality care. The IBD Pathway Navigator was introduced following consultation with senior staff and the Trust’s management to streamline services, improve patient pathways, and enhance patient care.
